Real-life View of Earth System Numerical Simulation Facility
II. Main Contents
Project introduction: The Earth System Numerical Simulation Facility is China's first dedicated earth system numerical simulation facility with independent intellectual property rights. With numerical simulation software for each layer of the earth system as its core, and with matching software and hardware specifications, it is among the world's leading facilities of its kind in terms of scale and comprehensive technical level.
The facility is called “寰” in Chinese and “EarthLab” in English.
The facility has been designed with the objective of gaining a deeper understanding of the fundamental laws of the earth's complex environmental system. It will also explore the physical, chemical and biological processes of the earth system's atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, biosphere and lithosphere. Furthermore, it will investigate the impact of each layer and their interactions on the earth system as a whole and on China's regional environment. The facility combines simulation and observation data to enhance the precision of forecasts, facilitating the quantitative portrayal and modeling of the intricate processes within the earth system at medium-scale resolutions. This provides invaluable scientific insight to support critical issues such as disaster prevention and mitigation, climate change adaptation, and atmospheric environmental governance.
The facility is mainly composed of the following five systems: the earth system model numerical simulation system, the regional high-precision environmental simulation system, the super-simulation support and management system, the support database and data assimilation and visualisation system, and the high-performance computing system for earth sciences.
