The Earth System Numerical Simulation Facility was constructed by the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is China's inaugural dedicated earth system numerical simulation facility with independent intellectual property rights, situated in the Huairou Science City. It is among the world's most advanced facilities in terms of scale and comprehensive technical capability.
The facility's objective is to gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental laws of the earth's complex environmental system. This will be achieved by exploring the physical, chemical and biological processes of the earth system, investigating the impact of various spheres and their interactions on the earth system as a whole and on China's regional environment. The aim is to improve the level of forecasts. The facility also provides scientific support for major national issues, including disaster prevention and mitigation, climate change adaptation, and atmospheric environment management. It offers a comprehensive experimental research platform for researchers in the field of earth systems, both domestic and international, and is playing a key role in advancing earth system science to world-class standards.
The facility includes the earth system model numerical simulation system, the regional high-precision environmental simulation system, the super-simulation support and management system, the support database and data assimilation and visualization system, and the high-performance computing system for earth sciences.
The facility was completed and launched in June 2021.
The Earth System Numerical Simulation Facility is now officially operational. The facility has been launched on the Sharing Service Platform for CAS Large Research Infrastructures (https://lssf.cas.cn). Please refer to the relevant information for further details.
