SDC Life Science and Health Symposium Held in Huairou Science City

Recently, the SDC Life Science and Health Symposium was held in Huairou Science City. The event was co-hosted by the Sino-Danish College (SDC) at the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) and the UCAS Research Center for Innovation Methods. The symposium focused on advances in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) research and treatment in China and Denmark and was chaired by Associate Professor Kim Ryun Drasbek of Aarhus University, the Danish head of the life-science track at SDC. More than seventy experts and scholars from renowned domestic and international institutions—including Aarhus University, Technical University of Denmark, Aalborg University Hospital, Peking University Third Hospital (PUTH), Chinese Organization for Rare Disorders (CORD), and United-Imaging—attended the symposium. Li Hong, Deputy Director of the International Exchange Center at the Beijing Association for Science and Technology; Yang Huifen, Director of the Technology Transfer and Innovation Coordination Division of the Administrative Committee of Huairou Science City; and Luo Dong, Vice Chair of the Huairou District Association for Science and Technology, also participated in the event.

Professor Wang Haiyan, Dean of the Sino-Danish College at UCAS and Director of the Research Center for Innovation Methods, delivered opening remarks. She expressed gratitude to the Innovation Centre Denmark (ICDK), the Beijing Association for Science and Technology, the Administrative Committee of Huairou Science City, and other organizations for their strong support. This year marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Denmark. In accordance with the China-Denmark Green Joint Work Plan signed by the two governments, the healthcare sector is one of the key areas of cooperation. The theme of today’s event not only addresses shared concerns of the Chinese and Danish peoples but also represents a common challenge facing the global community, making it highly significant.

During the keynote session, Professor Jakob Udby Blicher from Aalborg University Hospital, Huang Rufang—founder of the Chinese Organization for Rare Disorders (CORD), Researcher Li Yonghui from the Institute of Psychology at CAS, Researcher Song Kun from the School of Future Technology at Peking University, and Yu Dan—North China Scientific Collaboration Manager for the MR Business Unit at United-Imaging Healthcare—gave outstanding presentations.

A panel discussion titled “ALS: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Assistive Technologies” featured five experts and was moderated by Guo Yubo, Head of the life science and health division of Innovation Center Denmark (ICDK). Students and faculty from the SDC Neuroscience and Neuroimaging program actively engaged in the interactive session, generating lively discussion.

In-depth exchange among attendees
At the end of the symposium, Associate Professor Kim Ryun Drasbek of Aarhus University—the Danish head of the life-science field at SDC—delivered closing remarks. He congratulated the organizers on the successful event and thanked leaders, experts, and professors from both China and Denmark for their support. He expressed hope that the symposium will raise awareness and understanding of ALS and other rare diseases and looked forward to expanded collaboration between Chinese and Danish scientists in these fields in the future.
